99 - Publicidad: Sexo, euskera y cintas de vídeo | Sex, Basque and Video Tapes

La Fundación Leizaola (una institución privada cuyo fin es promover la lengua y cultura vascas, o al menos eso afirma) quiso animar a los jóvenes vascos a usar el euskera en su vida diaria. Los ejecutivos de la fundación decidieron emplear el arma publicitaria definitiva: el sexo. Así que filmaron dos vídeos de baja calidad y estética porno amateur, sazonados con sexo machista (por los que recibieron más de 3.500 euros en subvenciones públicas) y los subieron a YouTube. Y la campaña, desde luego, ha conseguido publicidad: El País, El Mundo, La Razón, ABC, El Correo, La Vanguardia, 20minutos...

(Los vídeos ya han sido eliminados de YouTube, pero aún se pueden ver en El País.)

Y yo me pregunto: ¿por qué la Fundación Leizaola pensó que utilizar el sexo para promocionar el vascuence era una buena idea? Hay infinidad de chistes sobre la tradicional mojigatería de los vascos. Como muestra, un tweet de @sirtrauma: «Me fui de vacaciones a Bilbao con una caja de 12 condones y volví con 14».

(Espero que la supuesta falta de sentido del humor de los vascos no sea más que otro tópico como este y que mis amigos euskaldunes me perdonen).

Their executives decided to use the ultimate advertising weapon —sex. So they shot two low-quality, amateur-porn-style videos spiced with some male chauvinist sex —for which they got more than 3,500 euros in public subsidies— and they uploaded them to YouTube. And the campaign's got publicity indeed: El País, El Mundo, La Razón, ABC, El Correo, La Vanguardia, 20minutos...

What I wonder is: why the Fundación Leizaola thought that promoting Basque through sex was a good idea? There are many jokes about the proverbial prudishness of the Basque people. Just a tweet of @sirtrauma as an example: “I went to Bilbao on holiday with a 12 condom box and I went back with 14.”

(I hope the supposed lack of a Basque sense of humour is just another cliché like this one and that my Basque-speaking friends forgive me.)

¿Se imagina alguien a un catedrático de cualquier universidad europea afirmando que las lenguas minoritarias son más útiles para las relaciones familares, para conseguir empleo, para interactuar con otras personas... que el inglés? Una vez más se demuestra que Spain is different. Juan Carlos Moreno Cabrera, doctor y catedrático de Lingüística en la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, es un buen ejemplo de que, si en EE. UU. cualquiera puede ser presidente, en España cualquiera puede ser catedrático universitario. Con los contactos políticos adecuados, por supuesto.

Can you imagine a professor in any European university stating that minority languages are more useful for family relationships, getting a job, interacting with other people... than English? Once again, Spain is different. Juan Carlos Moreno Cabrera, Ph. D. and Linguistics professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid is a good example that, if in America anyone can become President, in Spain anyone can become a professor. With the appropriate political connections, of course.

Los aficionados a los cómics de todo el mundo celebran hoy el 100 aniversario del nacimiento de Georges Remi «Hergé», el creador de Tintín. Cuando yo era un chaval, me encantaban los tebeos de Tintín; aún hoy me traen buenos recuerdos. Mi personaje favorito (en realidad, el de casi todo el mundo) era el Capitán Haddock, ese viejo cascarrabias con un talento extraordinario para encontrar palabrotas y juramentos de lo más expresivo, pero carentes de sentido e inofensivos. Como modesto homenaje a Hergé, ahí van varios enlaces relacionados con su creación: tres listas (esta y esta, ambas en inglés, vía Boing Boing, y esta en español) que recogen las palabrotas del Capitán Haddock (había otra en la Wikipedia, pero parece que se consideró demasiado políticamente incorrecta), otra lista con los juramentos originales en francés y el Generador de insultos del Capitán Haddock (también en inglés). ¡Que los disfrutéis, por mil millones de mil demonios!

Not knowing languages can cost you your life! I saw this last Thursday in La Gaceta de Salamanca, but I haven't been able to post it until today -Eugenia and Trevor have been quicker.

No le entendían. Un estadounidense de 33 años ha sufrido en Toledo la falta de habilidad de los españoles para los idiomas. Ayer fue rescatado por los bomberos con signos de hipotermia de un paraje en las riberas del Tajo después de pasarse horas pidiendo ayuda. Mientras la víctima gritaba «Help», los vecinos del lugar pensaban que alguien estaba llamando a un tal «Pepe».

He was not understood. In Toledo (Spain), a 33-year-old American has been a victim of Spaniards' proverbial inability to learn foreign languages. He was rescued yesterday from the river Tagus by firefighters -he showed signs of hypothermia after asking for help for hours. He was crying "help", but the locals thought somebody was calling for a man called "Pepe".

Hace unos meses, publiqué aquí un sketch de Tip y Coll, una de las parejas humorísticas más queridas de España. Luis Sánchez Polack «Tip» y José Luis Coll trabajaron juntos durante más de treinta años, desde 1967 hasta la muerte de Tip en 1999, y alcanzaron una enorme popularidad gracias a su humor crítico y surrealista.

A primera hora de esta mañana, ha fallecido José Luis Coll. Como modesto homenaje, presento hoy otro de los números cómicos de Tip y Coll: «La lección de francés».

Some months ago, I posted here a sketch from Tip y Coll, one of the best-loved Spanish double acts. Luis Sánchez Polack "Tip" and José Luis Coll worked together for more than thirty years, from 1967 to Tip's death in 1999, and became immensely popular due to their critical and surreal humour.

Early this morning, José Luis Coll has passed away. As a humble tribute, I post today "The French Lesson", another Tip y Coll's sketch.

Debo confesar que es la primera vez que veo un eufemismo (que yo sepa, se supone que es un eufemismo) usado como amenaza... ¿Está tan omnipresente la corrección política que ha llegado a oídos incluso de la gentuza del Ku Klux Klan?

Lenguaje: 2000 insults en català | 2,000 insults in Catalan

Siempre he creído que el conocimiento de los insultos y las palabras malsonantes permite comprender mejor la cultura que los emplea. Por tanto, es interesante echar un vistazo a la lista de 2.000 insultos en catalán recopilados por el filósofo y escritor Antoni Ibàñez. Vistos desde la perspectiva de un castellanohablante, algunos me han resultado extraños y sorprendentes:

-aragonès (literalmente, aragonés)
-baturro (según el DRAE, «rústico aragonés»)
-batxiller (literalmente, bachiller)
-borbó (literalmente, miembro de la familia Borbón)
-cagalló de la gramàtica («cagarruta de la gramática»)
-fill de monja («hijo de monja»)
-isidro (¿tal vez porque San Isidro es el patrón de Madrid?)
-jesuïta (literalmente, jesuita)
-Lacasito (la versión española de los M&M's)
-matapobres
-mustafà (Mustafá)
-no vals ni un pet de puta («no vales ni un pedo de puta»)
-sagristà de l'idioma («sacristán del idioma»)

Por desgracia, no domino el catalán demasiado bien, por lo que sin duda he pasado por alto otros muchos.

Antoni Ibàñez en persona ha tenido la amabilidad de indicarme que ha elaborado una nueva lista (Tots els insults catalans) actualizada con casi 1.000 insultos y palabras malsonantes más. Los lectores pueden enviarle sus aportaciones.

I've always thought that the knowldege of insults and swearwords gives a good insight into the culture that uses them. Therefore, it's interesting to take a look at the list of 2,000 insults in Catalan compiled by the philosopher and writer Antoni Ibàñez. I've found some of them -from a Spanish speaker point of view- really weird:

-aragonès (literally, Aragonese)
-baturro (literally, an Aragonese peasant)
-batxiller (literally, a secondary school graduate)
-borbó (literally, Bourbon-Borbón, a member of the Spanish Royal Family)
-cagalló de la gramàtica ("grammar's piece of shit")
-fill de monja ("son of a nun")
-isidro (perhaps because San Isidro is Madrid's patron saint?)
-jesuïta (literally, Jesuit)
-Lacasito (the Spanish version of M&M's)
-matapobres ("poor beggars' killer")
-mustafà (the Arab proper noun Mustapha)
-no vals ni un pet de puta ("you're not worth a whore's fart")
-sagristà de l'idioma ("language's verger")

Unfortunately, my knowledge of the Catalan language isn't very deep, so I've surely missed many others.

Mr Ibàñez himself has kindly pointed out to me that a new, updated list (Tots els insults catalans) with almost 1,000 insults and swearwords more. Readers' contributions are welcome.

Los dúos cómicos tienen una larga tradición en España: Cruz y Raya, Faemino y Cansado, Gomaespuma, Las Virtudes (Soledad Mallol y Elena Martín), Los Morancos, Martes y Trece... Uno de los más antiguos y populares fue Tip y Coll: Luis Sánchez Polack, «Tip», y José Luis Coll formaron pareja artística durante más de treinta años, desde 1967 hasta el fallecimiento de Tip en 1999. Posiblemente, su número cómico más famoso (parte integrante del cual era una interpretación simultánea al francés) sea este: «Cómo se llena un vaso de agua». Que lo disfruten.

A veces las lenguas se acercan tanto que la línea divisoria entre ellas se difumina cada vez más. Es el caso del español y el inglés en Estados Unidos; nos guste o no, parece que ambos idiomas se están mezclando para formar uno nuevo. Y este puede ser un proceso muy creativo. Aquí tenemos varios ejemplos de cómo se está desarrollando el Spanglish, escuchados en los tribunales de justicia estadounidenses y extraídos de la bitácora Courtinterpreter.net (Via kalebeul):

Sometimes languages come so close together that the boundary between them becomes more and more blurred. This is the case of Spanish and English in America -like it or not, it seems that both languages are merging into a new one. And this can be a very creative process. El Gobierno de Malasia no quiere que a los niños se les impongan nombres «inadecuados»:

El Departamento Nacional de Inscripciones de Malasia publicó una lista de nombres que no se les puede poner a los niños, como Hitler, Perro Apestoso o Cero Cero Siete. [...] Tradicionalmente, algunos grupos les ponían nombres desfavorables a los recién nacidos para espantar a los demonios y a los malos espíritus. [...] Los integrantes de la comunidad tamil malasia no deberán llamar a sus bebés Karrupusamy (Dios Negro) ni los malayos podrán ponerles a los suyos Woti (Coito).

Pero Malasia no es el único país que tiene este problema. Paraguay, por ejemplo, aprobó un decreto similar hace cuatro años para que los niños no reciban nombres «ridículos» o «extravagantes», como Degollación de los Niños Inocentes, Semen José, Pantaleón, Ceferino, Anacleto, Sinforiano, Tecla o Circuncisión del Señor (sin embargo, muchos nombres como estos eran relativamente frecuentes hasta hace poco en la parte de España en la que vivo). De todas formas, este objetivo va a resultar muy difícil en un continente en el que los padres le dan a sus hijos nombres como Hyundai, Linda Corona, Aufernee Blackcup, Lady-Sexy, John Fitzgerald or Maicol.

[Malaysia's National Registration Department has] published a list of undesirable titles to prevent parents giving their children names such as Hitler, smelly dog or 007. [...] Traditionally, some groups have given newborns inauspicious names to ward off demons and evil spirits. [...] Members of Malaysia's Tamil community will be discouraged from using the likes of Karrupusamy (black god), and Malays from trying names like Woti, meaning sexual intercourse.

But Malaysia is not the only country with this problem. Paraguay, for example, passed a similar decree four years ago in order to avoid children to be given "ridiculous" or "bizarre" names, such as Degollación de los Niños Inocentes, Semen José, Pantaleón, Ceferino, Anacleto, Sinforiano, Tecla or Circuncisión del Señor (many of these names, however, have been relatively common in the part of Spain where I live until very recently.) In any case, this is going to be an uphill battle in a continent where parents call their children Hyundai, Linda Corona, Aufernee Blackcup, Lady-Sexy, John Fitzgerald or Maicol.

Parece ser que la gran mayoría de los españoles no son capaces de aprender inglés (noticia al respecto); sin embargo, los viñetistas de la prensa española están usando cada vez más la mezcla de inglés y español como recurso humorístico. Este es un buen ejemplo:

La traductora ~~estadounidense~~ puertorriqueña Jo-Hanna Goettsche comenta en su bitácora una experiencia que estoy seguro de que la inmensa mayoría de quienes nos dedicamos a la traducción compartimos:

En el foro de ProZ.com, alguien preguntó cuáles eran las reacciones de otras personas cuando les dices que eres traductor. En mi caso, casi siempre es una de estas tres:

* *mirada perpeja*

* «¿De verdad? Eso... está muy bien.»

* Una conversación que confirma que la mayoría de la gente no sabe distinguir entre traducción e interpretación.

Real como la vida misma, ¿a que sí? ;o)

The ~~American~~ Puerto Rican translator Jo-Hanna Goettsche talks in her blog about an experience that -I am sure- virtually all of us who work as translators have had:

In the ProZ.com's forum, somebody asked about the reactions from others when they find out you are a translator. Pretty much, I get one of three reactions:

* *blank look*

* "Really? That's... nice."

* A conversation that confirms that most people don't know the difference between translation and interpreting.

A true-life story, isn't it? ;o)

El objeto de esta bitácora es tratar desde un punto de vista desenfadado (siempre con animus jocandi, sin intención de ofender a nadie) esas «cosas extrañas» que suceden cuando dos lenguas entran en contacto: por ejemplo, cuando hablantes de idiomas distintos se encuentran (físicamente o a través de la Red), en la enseñanza de lenguas extranjeras, la traducción, la interpretación, el doblaje...
